Give Generously. Claim Correctly.
A plain-English guide to tax deductible donations in Australia, from PBG Foundation, an ACNC registered charity funding humanitarian work across the Pacific.
Start With Your Question
Three guides, each with advice for every Australian state and major city.
Tax Deductible Donations
Claim your tax deductible donations with confidence. What the ATO requires, which charities qualify and how PBG Foundation helps Australian donors give before 30 June.
Read the guide GuideTax Donations
Tax donations explained for Australian donors: which gifts reduce your tax, what records the ATO expects and how to plan your giving with PBG Foundation.
Read the guide GuideCharitable Donations
Charitable donations that count at tax time. Check a charity's registration, keep the right records and support Pacific communities through PBG Foundation.
Read the guideGiving That Counts
Most Australians who give to charity want the gift to count twice: once for the people it helps and once on their tax return. The second part depends on a few details that are easy to miss, from the recipient’s DGR endorsement to the receipt you keep.
This guide is published by PBG Foundation, an ACNC registered Australian charity working with communities in Vanuatu and across the Pacific. Choose a topic below for plain-English guidance for your state and city.
General information only, not tax advice. Please confirm your own position with your accountant or the ATO.

Why Give With PBG
- Australian trust and governance, ACNC registered
- Long-term regional commitment across the Pacific
- Deep local understanding and community partners
The Four Checks For A Deductible Gift
The ATO rules are short but strict. These four checks cover most gifts made from Australia.
Check DGR status
Only gifts to organisations endorsed as Deductible Gift Recipients can be claimed. Check ABN Lookup or ask the charity.
Give $2 or more
The gift must be money or eligible property worth $2 or more, given voluntarily.
Nothing in return
Raffle tickets, dinners and merchandise are not deductible gifts. A genuine donation gets nothing material back.
Keep the record
Keep your receipt or bank record and give by 30 June to claim in that financial year.
